Wolfgang Schaphoff

November 11, 1938 — September 18, 2025

Beckley, WV

Wolfgang Schaphoff, 86, went to his Lord on Thursday, September 18, 2025, while resting at the Bowers Hospice House in Prosperity, West Virginia.

Born Wolfgang Ludwig von Schaphoff to Wilma and Theodore in Stuttgart, Wolfgang spent his childhood in World War II Germany. Shortly after his family abandoned their home, title, and most worldly possessions to flee west to Düsseldorf, Wolfgang attended trade school in Germany to become a journeyman brick mason and carpenter. He immigrated to the United States at age 19 and joined the Carpenter’s Union in New York before serving two years in the United States Army. Wolfgang began his first Superintendent job in 1964 and went on to build the Beckley Newspaper building, hospitals, nuclear power plants, and large apartment complexes. He enjoyed his work, cherished his family, and loved without condition. He was a longtime member of Beckley Lodge No. 95, A.F. and A.M.

Wolfgang was preceded in death by his brother Deiter, sisters Trautel and Geisela, sons Kevin DeWitt and Michael Schaphoff. He is survived by his wife, Brenda, and his children, Eric Schaphoff, Gina and Chris Whitby, and Carl and Leigh Ann Hutchens.

Per his wishes no services are planned.
