Wanda Kay Wood

September 18, 1944 — February 9, 2026

Wanda Kay (Sissy) Gunther Wood 81 of Sophia, West Virginia, went home to be with the Lord on February 9, 2026 at Raleigh General Hospital following a short illness.

Born on September 18, 1944, in Crab Orchard to the late Okey Gunther and Helen Fink Gunther McVey.

Wanda was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. She continued her education that consisted of a desire to help others. She attended LPN School where she found her calling in behavioral science. She devoted her life to caring for those in need. She retired from Beckley Appalachian Hospital after 35 years.

Wanda loved bowling, fishing and spending time with her family at the river. She loved when the holiday's rolled around, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Wanda was a very beautiful, kindhearted, sweet and loving soul.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Roger Wood whom she loved dearly, daughter Lori Mills Simpson, brother Walter Dain Gunther, and a great grandson Lane Simpson.

Those survivors left to cherish her memory; daughter Vicki Mills Kingery, of Sophia, sons Michael Toon of Sophia, Daniel Gill of Grandview, grandchildren Morgan Allen of Daniels, Rebekah Kingery Salyer of Virginia, Shayla Simpson Carpenter of Beckley, Scott Simpson and Shon Simpson of Beckley and 17 great grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date to celebrate the life of Wanda at Light House Baptist Church, Daniels, WV.
