Roy Lee Smith, 85, of Coal City, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2026.
Born on January 7, 1941, in Rhodell, West Virginia, Roy was the son of the late Lacy and Evelyn Woods Smith. He was also preceded in death by his in-laws, Obie and Rita Cruise; his daughter, Judy; his grandson, Joshua Smith; and his siblings, David Smith, Margaret Carr, Shirley Adkins, Betty Baker, and Earl Smith.
Roy lived a life defined by hard work, dedication, and love for his family. In his younger years, he spent time working at a fish market in Chicago before returning home to West Virginia, where he worked as a coal miner for many years. He took great pride in providing for his family and building a life rooted in resilience and commitment. He shared 47 loving years of marriage with his devoted wife, Diana Smith, who survives him. Roy deeply cherished his family and found joy in the simple pleasures of life, including playing pool and traveling.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Janice Caldwell; his sister-in-law, Brenda Main; his sister-in-law, Linda Smith; his children, Debbie (Randy) Murphy, Brenda (Ken) Greer, Roy Smith Jr., Carolina Crouch, Cynthia Wriston, Jason (Mitsy) Adkins, David (Christy) Adkins, Jeff (Samantha) Smith, Ashley (Daniel) Rosinski, and Christopher (Kimber) Adkins. He is also survived by 24 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom will carry on his memory.
A visitation will be held on Friday, March 20, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with funeral services beginning at 12:00 pm. at Calfee Funeral Home officiated by Bishop Clarence Lee.
Roy will be remembered for his strength, kindness, and unwavering love for his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
