Roger Dale Coalson

Roger Dale Coalson (Coaltrain), age 73, of Beckley, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 5, 2025, surrounded by his loving family at home after a yearlong battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born on June 3, 1952, in Mullens, WV, he was the son of the late Charles William Coalson Sr. and Blanche Hedrick Coalson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Charles Coalson, Jr., Earl Coalson, George Coalson, James Coalson and sisters, Virginia Gillispie, Blanche Bishop, Joyce Murdock, and Sandra Day.

Coaltrain was a retired coal miner and member of the UMWA. He attended Teel Apostolic Church and actively served in the Leadership Department and Boys’ Club. More than anything he enjoyed playing games, hunting, and fishing with his family. He was known for his great story telling and amazing cooking skills at the hunting camp. His wife was the love of his life, and they were always together working side by side on projects and enjoying annual trips to the beach. Those who knew Roger will remember him for his big smile and love for his children, grandchildren, and their spouses.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 54 years, Karen Coalson; four children, Jamie Coalson and his wife Kristy Coalson of Ghent, WV, Brian Coalson and his wife Jessica of Beckley, WV, Wendy Wilson and her husband Isaac of Beckley, WV, and Tasha Seals and her husband Robert of Dayton, OH.

Twelve grandchildren, Dr. Alexis Arnsberger(Dr. Brandon), Adrian Coalson, Brian Coalson, Jr.(Lesley), Cameron Coalson, Ashton Coalson, Kealan Coalson, Hunter Godby (Maricarmen), Chandler Godby, Jacob Wilson, Kenlee Godby, Hannah Godby and Grayson Seals. Three great-grandchildren: Roman Coalson, Raelynn Coalson and Peyton Arnsberger.

Sisters, Jean Blankenship of Beckley, WV, Fay Rhudy and her husband George of Phoenix, AZ, Pamela Magargal of Dunns, WV, Rita Blakeley of North East, MD, and Teresa Henry of Stephensburg, KY. Two brothers, Robert Coalson and his wife Karen of Beckley, WV, and Mickey Coalson of Shady Spring, WV. Two sisters-in-law, Teresa Coalson and Liz Coalson, Brother-in-law Toney Greco and wife Mary of Midway, WV.

The family extends special thanks to Dr. Amer Zureikat, Dr. Kamran Zahid, Dr. Amy Copeland, Dr. Jillian Hughart, Dr. Lostetter, Dr. E.J. Salon, Ashley Fleenor, P.A. and Scott Bailey, P.A., the CAMC Oncology Department and the CCU staff at Raleigh General Hospital for their outstanding care.

Funeral services will be held at Teel Apostolic Church, located at 219 Front Street, Beckley, WV 25801, on Wednesday, July 9, 2025. Friends may visit with the family from 5:00 -7:00 PM. The funeral service will follow at 7:00 PM with Bishop Gary D. Blankenship and Pastor Gary B. Blankenship officiating. Private burial will be held with family at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity, WV on Thursday, July 10, 2025.
