He served in the Army National Guard for 21 years before retiring from service in 1986 as an E-6 Staff Sergeant. One of his favorite memories of serving his country was his trip overseas to Germany. He loved telling about the many castles there and the many beers that he drank with his buddies. He also loved square dancing and meeting new people. He and Nettie have been square dancing since 1967 and Paul also served as President of the Greenbrier Valley Squares (square dancing club). He enjoyed fishing at the lake, boating and watching all of the wildlife visit - especially themany ducks and Canadian geese that came every year.

Paul is survived by his wife of 61 years, Nettie Jane Smith and his daughter, Melanie Vanderpool (Leddy) of Knoxville, TN. He also loved his grandchildren immensely - Kamela Johnson (Brett) or Rapid City, SD; Khayen Vanderpool (Bridget) of Bison, SD; and Kellen Vanderpool of Sturgis, SD and his great grandchildren, Joslyn, Burke, Krew and Via. He was also very appreciative and grateful for his long time employees and friends, Robert Perry and Kenny Bledsoe.
