Nicholas Andrew Thompson, Sr.

Nicholas Andrew Thompson, Sr., 94, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2025, at Beckley VA Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. Nick was born April 17, 1931 in Minden, WV. He was the beloved son of Nicholas and Elizabeth Easton Thompson. Mr. Thompson is preceded in death by his devoted wife of 66 years, Betty Rutledge Thompson. Sisters, Margaret Ruth Collier and husband Bill, Patty Calvert and husband Joe (Sonny).

Those left to cherish his memory include his children Alicia D. Thompson of Stafford, VA and Nicholas A. Thompson, Jr. and his wife Beth of Sophia, WV. He is survived by his cherished grandchildren, Michael J. Staton, Jr. of Stafford, VA, Zachary Nicholas Thompson and his wife Mara of Kenna, WV, and Holly D. Del Toro and her husband Brice of Long Island, NY; great­ grandchildren, Zyla, Charlotte, and Myles Nicholas. Mr. Thompson is also survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Nick was a graduate of Stoco High School and attended Concord University before enlisting in the United States Army to serve his country during the Korean War. He served as a Corporal for the 27th Regiment with the 25th Infantry Division. Mr. Thompson received the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, and United Nations Service Medal. After returning home, he worked at a coal mine in Whitby, WV. He later chose a career with the United States Postal Service serving as Postmaster at Whitby and Lester, WV for a total of 35 years where he was recognized for his exceptional service.

Beyond his professional life, Nick enjoyed studying his Bible, completing projects around the home, working jigsaw puzzles, playing bingo and card games, and listening to his favorite music. He found joy in these activities and shared his enthusiasm with those around him.

Nick was a man of strong Christian faith and character. He was a member of the Sophia United Methodist Church, and a source of guidance and strength for his family and friends. His legacy of love, kindness, and integrity will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to Ashley Richmond - Physician Assistant, doctors, nurses, and staff of Beckley VA Medical Center for their exceptional care.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at 1:00 P.M. in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Rumberg officiating. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service. A Military Honors Graveside Service will be held at Sunset Memorial Valor Garden, Beckley WV following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sophia United Methodist Church Memorial Fund in memory of Nicholas Thompson, P.O. Box 518, Sophia, WV 25921.
