Mickey Lee Elkins, 81, of Beckley, West Virginia, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, January 16, 2026. He was born in Kentucky to William (Bill) and Dorothy Elkins who went before him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Billy Clifton Elkins.
Mickey was a proud Marine veteran and former coal miner who loved to tell stories of his time in the mines. He devoted the last 20 years of his life to growing his relationship with Christ and sharing God’s love with others.
During his most difficult time of suffering, he never lost faith and kept a positive attitude. He would say, “The devil is jumping all over my body, but my spirit is strong.” He often spoke of the day he would meet Jesus. Oh, what joy he is experiencing now! With every trip to the cancer center, his spirit would grow as he shared God’s love with other patients and their loved ones. He reminded them of the kind of hope that only Christ can provide, not a hope in this world, but a hope in eternal life. This hope kept him smiling.
Mickey leaves behind his devoted wife, Ingrid, who never left his side. She knows that this is but a pause, and she will see him again one day. He will be missed by his brother, Richard Elkins (Nijai). In addition, Mickey will be watching over his children, Regina Schuler (Yancy), Shane Elkins (Kathleen), and Misty Hayes (Garry), his bonus children, Teresa Gilliam, Brian Woodford (Donna), and Charla Schubert (Hans). Mickey was blessed with 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren: Marshall Chriscoe (Lindsey), Maegan Chriscoe, Greg Meadows (Amber), Karl Meadows, Nicole Hayes, Jackson Elkins, Katelyn Elkins, Sarah Beckham, Kylie Akers (Nick), Cameron Heflin, Jakob Schubert, Ben Schubert, William Woodford (Clarissa), and Gracie Woodford, Kenna Ross, Kaedyn Chriscoe, Sadie Chriscoe, Remington Mabe, Hazel Chriscoe, Chloe Enamorado, Kymber Akers, Wrenley Akers, and Mateo Hurt, and Lucienne Woodford.
“The Gates of Heaven Opened Wide”
The gates of heaven opened wide,I saw my Savior’s face!Pain disappeared in glorious restWhile tears dissolved in grace.
My Lord stretched out His arms of loveAnd called me, “Child, come home.”I entered heaven’s glorious day –No more on earth I’ll roam.
He smiled and said, “Well done!” to me,Those words I’d longed to hear;So often I’d imagined themBut they were sweeter here…
