Margaret Smith

Margaret Cooper Smith, 94, of Crab Orchard, WV passed on April 5, 2026, She was born on September 25, 1931 in Clifftop, WV. Margaret was the daughter of the late Lillian Persinger Cooper and Clayton Cooper. She married John L. ,"Logie", Smith on April 4, 1953. He proceeded her in death on July 9, 1979.She was proceeded in death by two infant children, John L. Smith Jr. and Kathy Jane Smith as well as three brothers, Charles Cooper, Gary Cooper, and Donald Cooper.

Margaret graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1950. She loved attending the many class reunions and class lunches. Margaret was a lifetime member of Crab Orchard Baptist Church where she served multiple terms as a deaconess and served on the bereavement committee for many years.

She was inducted into the WV Voter Hall of Fame on September 10, 2014 for having never missed voting in an election. She loved "politicking" with her Democrat buddies Linda Klopp, Paul Flanagan, Liz Acord, Mary Frances Roop, Betty Riffe, and many others. Margaret was honored to be chosen as the Raleigh County Democrat of the Year multiple times. She retired from the Tax Office of the Raleigh County Sheriff's office.

Margaret is survived by one daughter, Marsha K. Smith, of Crab Orchard, WV and constant companion, Sassy. She is also survived by sister-in-laws Jean Cooper of MacArthur, WV and Faye Cooper of Crab Orchard and brother-in-law Jack (Janice) Smith of NC. Numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews survive her.

Pallbearers will be Ricky Cooper, Randy Cooper, Steve Cooper, Clarence Hicks, Melvin Kessler, and Andy Klopp. Honorary pallbearers will be Dennis Riffe, Paul Flannagan, G. P. Smith, and Donald Cooper II. Great nieces will be singing and accompanied by Martha Hutchinson.

A special thanks goes to her caregivers Dana, Molly, Lois, Tara, and Sue. They were loyal and showed her much compassion.

Services will be at 1:00 PM on Friday, April 10 at Crab Orchard Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 12:00 - 1:00 with the family from 11:00 - 12:00. Pastors Mike Sission and David Bush will be conducting the service.
