Jessie Dare Meadows

Jessie Dare Meadows, 86, of Mabscott, WV passed away in her sleep on April 1, 2026. Born February 19, 1940, in Beckley, WV, she was the daughter of the late James Preston and Nancy Ann (Wood) Meadows.

Jessie was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. She worked hard all her life and just recently said that she was thinking about retiring. She worked in the office at GC Murphy/Ames until it closed and then worked at JC Penney for several years before moving to the Coordinating Council for Independent Living where she worked for the last 33 years. She went to work every day with a smile on her face. She was well known throughout the agency as the lady that could work circles around most people. She was the honorary mother/grandmother to her extended family and coworkers. She was very stubborn and set in her ways but had a heart of gold.

Jessie was the person many looked to for advice and direction. She had her structure and routine but would go out of her way to help anyone in any way she could. You knew you could depend on her. She supported her family, friends, and coworkers with whatever they needed. She often had to be reminded of her age and that she should not still be trying to push mow her yard or shovel her driveway. She was always a hard worker, very independent and very likable.

Jessie was a great cook and made Sunday dinner for her extended family every week and on holidays for many years. She was the one to call when you were having a celebration or get together of any kind and she would make everything from sides to amazing desserts. She was best known for her homemade spaghetti, macaroni salad, homemade pies, and brownies.

In addition to her parents, J.P. and Nancy Meadows, she was preceded in death by siblings Lacy, Emerson, Arnold, Maxine, Josephine, Fay, Howard Page, Frank, and Tom and her close sister-in-law Susie Meadows. Those left to cherish her memory include brothers Preston (Shirley) Meadows of Buckeye, WV and Jim Meadows of Crab Orchard, WV. She will also be dearly missed by nieces and nephews Rhonda Ann Russ of Greensboro, NC, Mary Francis Stillwell and Vickie (Roy) Douglas of Hinton, WV, Ronald “Buzz” (Missy) Pettrey of Grandview, WV, Deborah Joy (Kevin) Fleming of Crab Orchard, WV, and Howard Page (Rebecca) Meadows of Hinton, WV and a large host of other nieces and nephews from all over the US.

Per her direct wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral services. She will be laid to rest in the Calfee Cemetery at Mt. Tabor by her parents.
