Jack D. McClung, 95, of Beckley, WV, left this earth for his forever home peacefully at his home after a short illness on Saturday, April 11, 2026.
Our daddy was born at home in Glen Morgan, WV, to his mother, now deceased, Edna Myrtle Lilly McClung Thompson. He is also preceded in death by his Uncle Don Lilly, Aunt Thelma Lilly Marlow Christian, and Uncle Jack Marlow.
His greatest loss was the passing of his wife and our mother Betty Jo of 71 years, two years ago. He expressed his love for her often after her passing and spoke frequently about the life they shared together.
Left to share his stories are his brothers, Dr. Richard Thompson (Rosalie) and Ralph Thompson (Georgia); his four children, John McClung (Denise), Jeff McClung (Mary), Robert McClung (Leslie), and Patty Jo McClung Anderson (Anthony); 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many special nephews and nieces. Along with as he would call her "the best little dog ever", Dottie.
He did not graduate from high school, but he was a man of great knowledge and skill. As a young man, he held many jobs—from a newspaper boy to a delivery runner for Jay Roles’ Floral. He served our country for seven years in the Army National Guard. He later worked for three years with the Coca-Cola Company before beginning a 30-year career with Purity Maid/Flowers Bakery, from which he retired. He was a longtime member of First Christian Church where he taught Sunday school for 50+ years, served as a deacon and then an elder.
If you knew him, you knew he liked to hunt, fish, play bingo, cut gemstones, play poker, paint cars, build model airplanes, and run his train set—but most importantly, he loved to talk about how Jesus came into his life. He always had an answer when you needed one. Later in life, we realized it might not have always been the right answer—but he always had one.
He would invite you to hunt with him and teach you how to hunt, but he wouldn’t let you wait too long to shoot. He loved having someone go to bingo with him. He built model airplanes for the boys to fly—and when they crashed, he would fix them. He had a sweet face everyone loved and never believed his age. He was a quiet, gentle man, full of life and stories—but he could have a stubborn streak at times. All of this made him the perfect daddy.
We are left to tell his stories—of hunting, bingo, and the visits he had from angels. How God saved him multiple times and forgave him even more. How God loved him even when he felt he wasn’t good enough. Our daddy was one of a kind—and if you knew him, you loved him.
Friends and family are invited to join us on Monday, April 20th (the first day of turkey season), at Calfee Funeral Home, 800 S. Oakwood Ave, Beckley, for visitation from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. We will then proceed to Sunset Memorial Park, 1925 Harper Road, Beckley, for the graveside service.
Pallbearers will be Anthony Anderson, Aaron Anderson, Josh McClung, Jeremy Southers, Jon Richmond, and Ty Norris. Honorary pallbearers include Jay Ball, Dr.Stephen Ulaki, Howard Hoskins, Wayne Maynor (deceased), Grady Hoskins (deceased), and Bob Kosnoski (deceased).
The family would like to thank the many nurses at Raleigh General Hospital during his short stay before coming home under hospice care, especially Tim Doyle for his commitment to his profession and the wonderful care he gave our daddy. We also thank Bowers Hospice House and their nurses and staff for their daily dedication to our family and others. Though our time with them was only 11 days, it means a lifetime to us.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating your time, resources, or contributions to Bowers Hospice House.
If you ever want to let Jack know you miss him, take yourself to Wendy’s and have a baked potato, enjoy a cold Coca-Cola and a Honey Bun (aka “Bunny Hun”), sit out in the woods and listen to what God created—watch for his turkeys and deer—or most importantly, tell someone about Jesus. Daddy will be right there with you.
Matthew 25:21 “Well done, my good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord.”
