Hartley J. Dunbar

April 16, 1927 — September 19, 2017

Hartley Junior Dunbar, 90, of Beckley went home to be with his Lord and Savior on September 19, 2017. Born in Hinton on April 16, 1927, he was the son of the late Hartley and Grace Russell Dunbar. He was one of eight children, survived only by his brother, James Dunbar of Maryland. He was a hard worker starting with farming at the young age of nine. He went on to work in the coal mines, own a restaurant and a store, and drive a dump truck that provided gravel for the turnpike. He loved flea markets, Cincinnati Reds baseball, and church. He was a longtime member of the Church of God. He served at the Page Church of God as Sunday school superintendent, worship leader, and teacher. He was a current member of the Glen White Church of God. He was an amazing storyteller who truly loved spending time with others and feeding them most of all.

He married his beloved wife of 71 years, Gladys Snuffer, on February 2, 1946, whom he met at the Sunbeam Bakery where they were both employed. They shared a lifetime of love, laughter, and adventure. They had five children who he loved beyond measure, Ronnie (deceased), Jerry (Barbara) Dunbar, Sue (Levi) McClung, Jeanie (the late Darrell) Moore, and Greg (Judy) Dunbar. He was the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren, Angie, J.W, Scott, James, Christy, Bethany, Drew, and Aaron, as well as 13 great grandchildren, Alexa, Tori, Myah, Kaden, Josselyn, Paris, Jayce, Oliver, Reese, Atticus, Reagan, Adalynn, and Nora. They all loved and adored their “Papaw”. He will be greatly missed by numerous other family and friends, including Joan Vilagie who he loved liked a daughter.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to his wonderful caregiver, Nicole Daniel and beloved sister-in-law, Joyce Bolen.

He will be remembered for his incredibly humble, gentle, kind, generous spirit and for his great love of the Lord and his family.

Funeral services will be 1pm Friday, September 22, 2017 at the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Pastors Jess Farley, Drew Dunbar and J.W. Dunbar officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family 1 hour prior to the service on Friday.
