George Ray Pugh

Beckley

George Ray Pugh, (aka Georgie Porgie, Papaw G, and the Skunk), 89, of Beckley, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 15, 2024, at Bowers Hospice House of Beckley surrounded by his family.

George was born in Glen White, West Virginia, on August 28,1934, to James Edward Pugh and Maude Miller Pugh. He had fond memories of being raised in a coal camp along with his many cousins. He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. George was in the retail business for over 50 years. He worked at Carolina Supermarket, EM Payne Company, Rahalls, H&M Shoes, Equifax, Stone and Thomas, and John Eye/Big Sandy. His hobbies included fishing, reading, and golfing. He was a member of the Oak Grove Christian Church and enjoyed attending Grandview Christian Church, Pikeview Christian Church, and Crab Orchard Church of the Brethern. He had been a member of the Beckley Kiwanis Club and had served as president of the Woodrow Wilson Dollars for Scholars committee. 

George is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Pugh; his children, Drema Hayes of Newland, North Carolina, Greg Pugh of Beckley, and Cherie Shuler of Scottsburg, Indiana; stepdaughters, Julie Snuffer of Beckley and Kim Smallwood of Saint Paul, Virginia; grandchildren, Kimber Massee, Kayla Hayes, Kevin Hayes, Jordan Shuler, Kendra Shuler, Leah Shuler, Jessika Snuffer, Josh Smallwood, and Justin Smallwood. He was the proud great-grandfather to Grayson and Carter Massee. 

The Pugh family would like to express their appreciation to the wonderful staff of the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Visitation will be Monday, June 17, 2024, from 5:30 to 7 pm at Calfee Funeral Home in Beckley. Funeral services will be at 7 pm with Jim Owston officiating. George was a huge WVU fan. If you would like to wear West Virginia gold and blue to remember him, George would be honored. Burial will be 11am at Oak Grove Cemetery on Tuesday. 

Donations of sympathy may be made to the Bowers Hospice House in George’s name.
