George Adam Massing Jr., 98, passed away Monday, April 21, 2025, at Raleigh General Hospital, in Beckley, West Virginia.
Born in Winona, West Virginia on August 23, 1926, George was the son of the late George A. Massing Sr and the late Nola C. Massing, and was a proud Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. After leaving the army following the combat death of his brother, the late James E. Massing, George married his high school sweetheart, Mickey, and the two settled in Beckley where he spent his career working for Slab Fork Coal Company and Fairchild International.
Independent and actively involved in his community until his death, George volunteered with many local organizations and held both elder and deacon positions at First Christian Church of Beckley.
George was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce "Mickey" Maxine Massing, and his grandson, Andy Martin. He is survived by his children, Linda Martin (John) and Jim Massing (Alice), his grandchildren, Chris Martin (Denise), Timothy Massing, Thomas Massing, Hannah Johnson (Cameron) and Audrey Martin, wife of his late grandson Andy. George is also survived by 8 great-grandchildren, Ethan, Drew and Tyler Martin, Nathan Martin, and Grace, Lily, Savannah, and Penelope Johnson.
Visitation will be Sunday, April 27th at 12:30pm with a service immediately following at Calfee Funeral Home, 800 S. Oakwood Ave, Beckley, WV. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens where George will be reunited with his wife.
George was proud of his military service, and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Beckley VFW, 1708 S. Kanawha St., Beckley, WV 25801.
