Darren Brett Gray, 52, of Mount Hope, passed away on March 4, 2026. He was born on April 2, 1973, in Beckley, WV. Darren spent all of his career as a passionate and dedicated Fed Ex delivery driver and made countless friends through his work. Known by name to many of those he delivered to, he truly cherished the connections he built throughout his 28-plus years with the company.
Darren was raised on a farm with his two older siblings. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and horseback riding in his early years. Darren was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School where he was a member and trumpet player for the marching band.
An enthusiastic civil war history buff, Darren loved exploring war sites and battleground memorials, always eager to soak in the lessons of the past. He had a special fondness for travel, particularly to beaches where he could enjoy the ocean breeze, often cruising in his beloved convertible 50th Anniversary Edition Camaro. March Madness was his favorite time of year; he meticulously planned his work schedule to ensure he wouldn't miss a single game. Whether it was golfing or sharing meals with family or friends, Darren's infectious humor and storytelling ability brought joy to everyone around him. His catchphrase of "I had to laugh" will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Darren was preceded in death by his father Ernest A. Gray, mother Betty R. Gray and brother Ernest "Mike" Gray. Darren is survived by his loving sister, Sheri Moore (Marshall Richards), and an adoring group of nieces and nephews: Amanda Moore, Sarah (Barkley) Jones, great niece Lacey Kate Jones, Kayla (Steven) Dinkler, great niece Ariella Dinkler, Quinn (Megan) Gray, Jordan Gray (Blake Wingrove), Dillon Gray, and sister-in-law Phyllis Gray. As we celebrate his life, we will remember his kindness, humor, and the countless memories he created with his family and friends.
A memorial service to honor Darren's life will be held at Calfee Funeral Home Chapel on March 8, 2026, at 3:00 pm. Friends and family are invited to gather an hour prior to the service. Please join us as we pay tribute to a remarkable man who touched so many lives.
