Tommy T. Prince

Tommy Tolbert Prince, 93, of Beckley, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2014 at his home. He was born October 31, 1920 at Hinton to the late James Clarkson Prince and Hilda Brook Tolbert Prince.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Madge Click Prince, his brother James Andrew Prince; his sister Margaret Rose Prince Shanks; his nephew and namesake Tommy Prince; and his dearest friends Leo Lares, David Mullins, Ray Gravely and Henry Noel.

Mr. Prince is survived by his sister Mildred Prince Rogar, of Beckley; his daughters Jane Lee Prince Watson and husband George M Watson , of Logan; Rosemary Prince Hange, of Beckley; Sarah Day Prince Winters and husband James D Winters of Clarksburg; Elizabeth Ann (Betsy) Prince Smolder and husband Michael A Smolder, and Lynn Margaret (Meg) Prince, all of Beckley.

He is the grandfather of George Michael Watson II and wife Tracy of Hurricane; Lee Prince Watson Tomblin and husband Ted of Logan; Naomi Prince Hange, of Mt. Hope; Suzanne Edmunds Hange, of Brooklyn, New York; Meade Gaston Winters of Morgantown; Elizabeth Paige Winters of Teays Valley; Malati Johnson Reeve and husband Joshua, Marilyn Pearce, Jennifer Smolder, Tiffany Smolder Kapp and husband Noah, all of Beckley; Sean Smolder and wife Amanda, of Richmond, VA.

His great-grandchildren include Christopher Tomblin and wife Jenna of Lenore, NC; Olivia Tomblin Cude and husband Robert, and TJ Tomblin, all of Logan; Abigail, Michael and Anna Watson, all of Hurricane; Isaac Reeve and Paydin Lively, both of Beckley; Jackson and Harper Smolder, of Richmond, VA and his great-great-grandson Luke Cude, of Logan.

He is the uncle of nephews James R. Prince, of Shady Spring; Paul R. Prince, of Waynesboro, VA; Edward T. Shanks, of Pembroke Pines, FL; Charles P. Shanks, of Camp Creek; J. Gary Rogar and niece L. Elaine Shanks, both of Beckley; and cousin of John Earl Tolbert, of Lewisburg, formerly of Beckley.

A dear and devoted family friend, Frances Hurtte, also survives him.

Mr. Prince was a member of the Beckley First Christian Church where he served as a deacon, past president and President Emeritus of the Men’s Class. He became a Free Mason at Aracoma Lodge No. 99 in Logan, August 1946; was a 50 year member and Past Master of Grand Lodge of West Virginia Beckley No. 95; a member of Grand Chapter of West Virginia Beckley No. 38, Mt. Hope Commandery No. 22; Past Worth Patron Order of the Eastern Star Bethlehem Chapter No. 71; a member of White Shrine, Scottish Rite and Red Cross of Constantine Knights Templar.

He retired from C&P Telephone Company and was a member of the C&P Telephone Pioneers; a graduate of the Woodrow Wilson High School Class of 1939; a charter member and past president of Blue Jay Lake Association; a member of The Red Hat Hunt Club; a member of The Mercer County Anglers Club and an original member and infielder for the Johnstown Red Onions baseball team.

Services for T.T. Prince will be conducted by the Rev. Don Snyder Saturday, June 21, 2014 at 2 in the afternoon at the Beckley First Christian Church, Courthouse Square, Beckley, West Virginia. Visitation will be Friday, June 20th from 6 until 8 in the evening at Calfee Funeral Home, 800 South Oakwood Avenue, Beckley.

His Masonic brothers will carry and commit him to his final rest at Wildwood Cemetery, Beckley.
