Sarah Jane Sallie Word

Sarah Jane (Sallie) Powers Word passed away on January 7, 2015. Sallie was born in Beckley, West Virginia on September 8, 1928, the daughter of Matthias W. Powers and Hilda Brabban Powers. Sallie was preceded in death by her husband, James (Jim) W. Word Jr, her brother Matthew W. Powers, and her sister Hilda Powers Walters. She is survived by her daughter Laura J. Word (husband Neilson Lamar Williams), her son James (Jay) W. Word III (wife Lisa Clemens Word), and her two grandsons, James Matthew Word (wife Aimee Danielle Word) and Stephen Douglas Word.
Sallie graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and then attended Ward Belmont College in Nashville, TN. She was active in the Beckley Presbyterian Church, Phymosia Garden Club, and the Beckley Art Group. For many years, Sallie and Jim enjoyed winters in Bonita Springs, Florida, where Sallie was involved with the Art League of Bonita Springs. She loved her family, her friends, and art.
A celebration of Sallie’s life will be at 12:00 noon Saturday, January 10, 2015 in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend John C. McKinnon officiating. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to services on Saturday.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to either the Beckley Area Foundation, 129 Main St., Suite 203, Beckley, WV 25801 or the Beckley Presbyterian Church, 203 S. Kanawha St., Beckley, WV 25801.
