Ruth Rakes Evans

Ruth Rakes Evans, 98, of Beckley, formerly of Beaver, passed away Friday, August 7, 2009 in a Beckley hospital. Born January 14, 1911 in Beaver, she was the daughter of Oscar R. and Annie Humphries Rakes who preceded her in death. Mrs. Evans was a graduate of Concord College and taught school at Beaver Elementary School for 43 years. She was a member of Raleigh County Classroom Teachers and West Virginia Education Associations, an active member of the Beaver First Baptist Church, serving as church clerk on two different occasions, Sunday School teacher and a member of the Women's Missionary Society. Ruth is best remembered by her stories of 'The Journey'.She was preceded in death by three brothers; Frank, John and Jack Rakes and by three sisters; Mildred Morefield, Jane Dove and Doris Walker.
Survivors include her beloved son, Joseph David Evans and his wife Anita of Beckley, grandson, Joseph David Evans, II, and his wife Alisa and two great grandchildren; Lily and Paul Evans of Concord, NC, numerous nieces and nephews.
Private graveside rites will be Monday, August 10, 2009 with Rev. Allen Copenhaver officiating.
