Martha Smith, 76, of Palm Bay, Florida, formerly of Beckley, passed away at University of Virginia Medical Center on February 23, 2014.
She was born on June 3, 1937, in Raleigh County, to the late Woodrow and Ruth Grimes.
Martha was a magistrate assistant in Raleigh County for fifteen years until moving to Floyd, Virginia, where she became a magistrate until she retired. While living in Floyd, she also owned a gift shop on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
After retiring, she and her late husband, Ray, made their home in Palm Bay, Florida.
Martha enjoyed traveling, working in her yard and flower beds, playing the slot machines, and making beautiful flower arrangements. Her biggest joy was spending time with her granddaughter, watching her grow into an awesome skier, and attending her many recitals and Nutcracker performances.
Her loving husband, Ray Smith, of 56 years, preceded her in death on February 28, 2011.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Debbie and her husband Curtis Goad of Virginia, Cheryl and her husband Tom Potts of Beckley, her precious granddaughter, Presley Rae Peterson, step-grandson Josh Goad, and step-great granddaughter, Alivia, of San Diego, Calif.
She is also survived by brothers, Dean Grimes of Beckley, Norman Grimes of Texas, and a sister, Peggy Roza of Michigan.
Martha also leaves behind countless life-long friends reaching from the east coast to the west coast.
Her daughters would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Gary Poling and his staff as well as Eppy’s IV for their devoted care of their mother.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2014, at Calfee Funeral Home with Rick Snuffer officiating. Visitation is from 1-3 p.m., and service will be at 3 p.m.
