Lawrence Cavendish

Larry was a veteran of WWII and a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. He was the last surviving of ten children of Walter S. and Nettie Mae Kenny Cavendish. He held a Masters Degree in Agriculture form WVU and taught in public schools in West Virginia for 6 years, including advising the National Gold Emblem Chapter at Ripley High School. He was the first Director of the State FFA-FHA Camp, Cedar Lakes, from 1951-1964 and oversaw construction of the main campus and creations of numerous state programs. He was instrumental in the creation of the Mountain State Arts and Crafts Fair at Cedar Lakes coinciding with the State Centennial in 1963. He later also helped organize the Appalachian Arts and Crafts Festival and the Stonewall Jackson Jubilee in Weston.
Larry worked in the Extension Service as a county agent and program specialist for 10 years and was Director of the State 4-H Camp at Jackson's Mill for 8 years before his retirement in 1980.
After retirement, he was active in the leadership of the Soil Conservation Service, the Raleigh County Farm Bureau and the WV 4-H Club Foundation, 4-H All Star, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was inducted into the WV Agriculture Hall of Fame in 1999. Larry was a long-time member of the Epworth Methodist Church in Ripley and the United Methodist Temple of Beckley since 1964.
