Herbert Edward Snuffer

Herbert Edward Snuffer, 90, of Beckley, entered into a new life on March 9, 2011, at his home in the loving care of his bride of 71 years Hazel Ferguson whom he married in October 1939. Born January 19, 1921 in Bolt, WV, he was the eldest son of the late Herbert Cyrus Snuffer and Elsie Jane Shrewsbury Snuffer.
Edward was a member of Memorial Baptist Church since 1950 having served as usher, trustee, and deacon. He was a charter member of the Raleigh County Horsemans Association, a member of WV Horsemans Association, and Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders Association from 1956 to 1972. He was a charter member of the Southern WV Homebuilders Association and a life director of the State Homebuilders Association. Edward had been an avid hunter and fisherman spending some of his happiest times on the water or in the woods with friends and family.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother James E. Snuffer of Fayetteville, WV, and sisters Ruth Greco High of Brandon, FL, and Ester Rodecker of Orlando, FL.
Survivors include sisters Joyce Bolen of Beckley and Gladys Dunbar of Beckley, two sons W. Edward and wife Connie Curtis Snuffer of Daniels, and Danny Ray and wife Linda Myers Snuffer of Beckley. Four grandchildren William Edward Snuffer II of Columbus, OH, Rick Snuffer and wife Lori Basham Snuffer of Grandview, WV, Eric L. Snuffer and wife Regina Day Snuffer of Fayetteville, WV, and Danny Ray Snuffer, Jr. of Flat Top Lake and Charleston, WV; seven great grandchildren Nathan, Christopher, David, Rhys, Moira, Erica and Rachel.
Edward was a graduate of Trap Hill School in 1938 becoming the first of his family to graduate. Early in WW II he worked three years for the Army Corps of Engineers at the Port of Embarkation in Norfolk, VA, serving from 1944 to 1946 with the US Army Infantry in Italy leaving at the rank of Tech Five Corporal. In 1948 he began his career as a homebuilder and developer doing one of the area’s first sub-divisions. He was responsible for building more than 500 homes and apartments in the local area, retiring as President of Wesco Homes, Inc in 1996.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at Memorial Baptist Church with Pastor Paul Blizzard officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with military honors conducted by Oak Hill VFW Post 3110. Friends may call at the Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley from 7-9 p.m. Friday.
Pallbearers will be Mark Bolen, Lloyd Crook, Craig Clemons, Roger Johnson, Randy Venable and Mike White.
