Helen Rushbrook Bazzarre
June 20, 1925 — July 15, 2013
Helen Rushbrook Bazzarre, 88, of Beckley, passed away Monday, July 15, 2013. Born June 20, 1925 in McAlpine, WV, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Nellie Rushbrook. Besides her parents Helen was preceded in death by a brother, Oather Rushbrook.
Mrs. Bazzarre was a graduate of Mark Twain High School and an active member of the Mark Twain High School Alumni Association. Helen graduated from the Raleigh General Hospital Nursing School and served in the Cadet Nurses Corp during World War II. She retired from the V.A. Medical Center after 30 years of dedicated work. At the time of her retirement she was supervisor of the Nursing Home Care Unit, a position she held for 18 years. She was a past member of the WV Nurses Association and the American Nurses Association. While employed at the VAMC, she was a writer and director of several comedy plays depicting nurses and several “This Is Your Life” plays. Helen was an active member of the Raleigh General Hospital Nurses Association having served as president for several years. She was also a member of the National Federation of Federal Employees. Helen was a member of the First Baptist Church in Beckley having served as deaconess, Chairman of the Kitchen Commity and Fellowship Sunday School Class where she served as president for many years.
Helen is survived by her husband of 67 years, Roy Wadell Bazzarre; a sister, Alice Boothe of Sterling Heights, MI and Samantha, her beloved cat. She is also survived by beloved nieces, Mary Lynn Schnurr of Virginia and Joyce Dair Maytachak of Sterling Heights, MI; a nephew, Edy Rushbrook of Cross Lanes, WV and several great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Beckley with Pastor Doc Adkins officiating. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers the family asks memorial donations be made to First Baptist Church, 422 Neville St. Beckley, WV 25801 or the Raleigh County Humane Society, 325 Grey Flats Rd. Beckley, WV 25801.
