Helen Farris Hayes passed away Friday, February 22, 2013 after a brief illness. Born in Beckley she was the daughter of the late Gus and Jamile Salem Farris.
Helen attended local schools, and was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and Beckley College. She was an active member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, The Shepherd’s Center, and served as a volunteer with Raleigh General Hospital for thirty years. She was a past member of the Beckley Women’s Club, Black Knight Country Club, and White Oak Country Club in Oak Hill. Helen was an avid golfer and bridge player.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Hayes on June 11, 1991; sisters Alice Lynch, Isabel Farris, and brothers Felix Farris, Joseph Farris, Elmer Farris, Dr. James Farris, and Dr. Frederick Farris.
She is survived by sisters Evelyn Farris of Beckley, Florence Boisse of Manchester, New Hampshire, and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral liturgy will be held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Beckley on Monday, February 25, 2013 at 11:00 am with Father Babu Joseph Elamturuthil officiating. A rite of committal will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the services.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
