In Loving Memory of Gary Schiffer who died on Sunday, February 8, 2009 at age 68 at the Bowers Hospice House. Gary was born in Beckley, West Virginia on January 1, 1941 to his late mother Anne Cook Schiffer. He grew up and eventually returned to spend his life in Beckley with short stints in NY as a “runner” on Wall Street and in the Army stationed in West Germany where he served as an Army Tank Commander from 1959 to 1963. While in the Army he was a Scoutmaster to an American scout unit in West Germany, and managed a local baseball team while stationed in Crailsheim. When he returned from service he continued his love of baseball, for the next 30 years, by being active in his local little league. In addition, he earned many awards throughout his lifetime as a Boy Scout, Eagle Scout and as adult he earned the highest honor of the Silver Beaver Award. His greatest love and privilege was educating children for 30 years at Mark Twain Elementary School and Piney View Elementary School, both in Beckley, and earned the American Legion Teacher Award. Gary or “Bubby” as he is known to his family will be sadly missed. He is survived by his sister Helen and her husband Dr. Abul Mohiuddin, his nephews Abu and Khaled and their families, cousins Howard Yeager and his wife Carol, Barbara Delp, Mary Elizabeth Cantwell and her husband Danny, Lory Cook, Linda Ann Cook, Michael Cook, and Linda Marie Cook the widow of J.C.
