Dennis Ray Stone

May 2, 1926 — January 30, 2016

Dennis Ray Stone of Beckley, passed away Saturday, January 30, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born May 2, 1926 at Kilsyth, WV, he was the son of the late Seibert Ray and Ruth Kathryn Bridgette Stone. Preceding him in death was his wife of 56 years Yvonne; brother Ted; sisters Jean West and Sarah Jane Voiers.
Denny served in the US Navy during WW II and the Korean Conflict. On May 28, 1945 the USS Drexler DD 741 was attacked by two kamikaze planes and the ship went down in less than five minutes with 158 men. Dennis was one of the survivors of that attack. He was a member of the USS Drexler Survivors Association and loved attending the yearly reunions with family members. He worked in machine shops for the New River Company, Long Airdox and Cogar Mine Supply. After retirement he enjoyed working at Beaver Creek Golf Course and in recent years at Brier Patch Golf Course.
He loved trout fishing, camping in travel trailers and driving around the country enjoying the scenery. He loved spending time with his family.
He was a member of the Crab Orchard Missionary Baptist Church.
He is survived by a daughter Lynda Brown (Gary) of Charleston, WV; granddaughters, Dr. Sarah Brown Stauffer (Eric) of Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland and Paige Brown Martin (Jeremy) of Dayton, OH; three great-grandchildren, Blake Martin, Dylan Stauffer and Savannah Stauffer; sisters-in-law, Dalores Vira of Beckley, WV and Lorna Phillips of Princeton, WV and lady friend, Muriel Kincaid of MacArthur, WV.
Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 3, 2016 in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dr. Michael Sisson officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Don Jones, Dennis Riffe, Joe Smith, Fred Williams, Jack Stone and Pete Gorsky
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Dr., Beckley or Crab Orchard Missionary Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 446, Crab Orchard, WV 25827.
