Alice Cary Polhamus Link, 98, of Beaver, WV, formerly of Charles Town, WV, and Port St. Lucie, FL, quietly went to her maker on August 16, 2020 at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, WV.
She was born 25 Aug 1921 to Clinton Maynard and Mary Joseph “Mamie” Fenton Polhamus in Swimly, Clark County, VA. She was a graduate of Berryville High School and attended St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg, MD. She worked for O’Sullivan Rubber Company in Winchester, VA, for Adam Link and Sons in Charleston, WV, and in the supply department at the Martinsburg VA hospital in Berkley County, WV.
Alice was an avid gardener, became a charter member of the Dolley Madison Garden Club in Charles Town, WV, and after moving to Florida, a charter member of the St. Lucie West Garden Club. In 2015 she was honored with a lifetime membership in the Florida Federation of garden Clubs.
Alice was a craftsman as well, enjoying sewing, tailoring, crocheting, and knitting; doing needlework, creating ceramic pottery, and painting. She loved helping others by using her many talents, including teaching flower arranging to many youths at Camp Frame 4-H camp.
She was a member of the Roman catholic Church in each community where she lived.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 72 years, Howard Bayrle Link, a son, Howard Bayrle Link, II, and a daughter, Kitty Kayrl Kaplan, as well as, her parents, sisters Mary Bonner and Kitty Rudolph, a brother Tommy Polhamus, a step sister Margaret Myers, and a step-brother, Brig. Gen. Douglas C. Polhamus. She is survived by one daughter, Linda Louise Whitman (Mrs. Richard C.) of Beckley, WV; grandsons Brian (Nancy) Whitman of Acworth, GA, David (Lindsay) Kaplan of Fort Collins, CO, Samuel Kaplan of Huntington, WV; a granddaughter Julie (Brijesh) Kukreja of Algonquin, IL; four great grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank the many caring personnel at The Inn at Greystone Assisted Living facility in Beaver, where Alice has called home since 2017.
Friends may visit with the family from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, August 19, 2020 at Calfee Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the St. James Catholic Church (49 Crosswinds Dr., Charles Town, WV 25414 or to the charity of their choice.
